FAQ

What can I expect during my first appointment?

An initial appointment involves a full health review, where Michaela will take a deep dive into your presenting complaint, and then go through a series of questions about all the body systems. It is not unusual to come to acupuncture for one thing, but to be asked about another - for example - you may come in for headaches, and Michaela will ask about your sleep, digestion and body temperature. As Chinese medicine is a full body medicine, this information is important to understanding the root cause of an issue, and your overall health status, so she can provide an appropriate and effective treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

This will be discussed during your treatment as it is dependent on the condition you have come in with. In general, chronic, long term illnesses will require longer courses of treatment than an acute injury or something like a cold or flu.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture is very relaxing, many people even doze off during the session! Michaela applies a very gentle technique to her needling. You may feel some sensations at the acupuncture point - a light prickle, a spreading sensation, a warm feeling or a heaviness are all common sensations from needling. Michaela will be checking in with you through the whole process, and if a point is painful, let her know as this can be adjusted to your comfort.

No. Infection control is of the utmost importance. Michaela uses single use, sterile needles, and works in a clean and safe environment.

Do you reuse acupuncture needles?

Loose, comfortable clothing is preferred. Acupuncture often involves putting needles in the legs, arms, abdomen or back, so easy access to these areas means less clothes will need to be removed. However, if you do need to remove items of clothing, towels are available to keep you covered and warm.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Michaela uses KPC Herbal granules, a fine powder that is mixed into hot water and consumed. It is common to take these 1-2 times per day. These are prepared by Michaela during your appointment so you can take them home with you with clear instructions on how to take them.

Are treatments covered by private health insurance?

Michaela is a registered practitioner, and her treatments are claimable through private health insurance. It is best to check with your health fund if you are covered for acupuncture as this is dependent on your type of extras cover.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please try to cancel appointments with as much notice as possible. Michaela often has a waiting list, and this allows us time to contact those people wanting an appointment to fill the spot.
Appointments cancelled within 24 hours of your scheduled appointment will incur a 50% late cancellation fee. No-shows will incur a 100% fee.

Initial appointments run for 1 hour, to allow for a full health review, and an appropriate treatment. Follow up appointments are 45 minutes.

How long do treatments typically last?

Yes, absolutely. Michaela encourages you to see your health from a holistic perspective, and this includes staying up to date with relevant testing through a GP or specialist, and seeing other allied practitioners where appropriate.
If you have recent test results, please bring them to your appointment.

Can I combine acupuncture with other medical treatments?

Should I eat before acupuncture?

Yes please! Or at least, do not arrive with an empty stomach to avoid feeling nauseous or light headed in the session.
Please do not consume alcohol before an acupuncture session. In doing this, you risk being denied treatment and incurring the full appointment fee as this can be unsafe.

Can I attend if I have cold or flu symptoms?

If you are unwell on the day of your appointment, please contact Michaela before coming in. She will assess this on a case by case basis, but it is her priority to keep herself and other clients safe and well. If you are able to come in, please wear a mask.
